The Explore Scientific Sidara Pro 127mm is a motorized GoTo Maksutov-Cassegrain telescope — a compact "catadioptric" design that folds a very long focal length into a short, portable tube using a mirror and a front corrector lens. With 127mm of aperture and a long 1900mm focal length (f/15), it's a planetary powerhouse, and the SkyAssist GoTo mount finds and tracks your targets automatically.

Choose an object in the SkyAssist app and the motors slew the telescope to it and keep it centred as the Earth turns — perfect for holding a high-magnification view of Saturn or a lunar crater rock-steady while everyone takes a look.

Who it's for: Beginners and planetary enthusiasts who want high magnification with automatic finding and tracking in a portable package. Want to understand automated scopes first? Read our guide to GoTo vs manual telescopes.

  • 127mm Maksutov optics: sharp, high-contrast images built for the Moon and planets.
  • Long 1900mm focal length: high magnification with everyday eyepieces (f/15).
  • Motorized GoTo mount: automatically slews to and tracks objects you pick in the app.
  • Compact and sealed: a short tube that resists dust and dew and never needs collimation.
  • Complete package: optical tube and GoTo mount together, ready to observe.

What you'll see: This is a lunar and planetary specialist. Expect sharp craters and ridges along the Moon's terminator, Saturn's rings and Cassini division on steady nights, Jupiter's cloud belts and moons, and the phases of Venus — all held rock-steady by automatic tracking. Brighter double stars and small planetary nebulae also look crisp; faint galaxies are dimmer at this long focal ratio.

What is a Maksutov-Cassegrain?
It's a catadioptric telescope that uses a mirror and a front corrector lens to pack a long focal length into a short, sealed tube, giving high magnification in a compact, low-maintenance design.

Why is it so good for planets?
Its long f/15 focal length and sealed optics deliver high-contrast, high-magnification views that suit the Moon and planets especially well.

Do I ever need to collimate it?
No — the sealed Maksutov design holds alignment and doesn't require routine collimation like a Newtonian reflector.

How does the GoTo mount work?
After a quick guided alignment in the SkyAssist app, the motorized mount automatically finds and tracks any object you select.
